Ghawasee
was always a family dance and had its particular styles, which were
descended from a mother to a daughter. The men of such families performed
music and the women danced during festivals and wedding parties. In
that manner each member of family could earn their living. The music
of Ghawasee, theirs styles and traditions differ much from the nation
of Saidi,
who lives in the same region (of Egypt).
The movements of this style aren’t so various as in Raks
Sharqi, but dancers can coquet with spectators for
hours.
They often use cymbals (sagat).
The nation of Ghawasee descends from gypsies and this is a very popular
nation, danced in Egypt.
The women of Ghawasee are named “Ghawasee” and the men-
“Ghazee”. It is considered, that they don’t resemble
egyptians and theirs women are the most beautiful women.
Ghawasee live in any big village of Egypt, particularly to the north
of the country, and they live in towns of the Nile delta. The women
of Ghawasee danced in the streets, markets, festivals and wedding
parties. They were the most famous dancers of Egypt.
The style of this dance wasn’t very artificial, but it was fully
of gipsy temperament.
The
Music of Ghawasee
Ghawasee
has its own rhythm. The compositions are performed with folklore instruments.
The
Costume of Ghawasee
The traditional costume of this style consists of a caftan, which
is dressed above wide trousers and a shirt. A shawl with a frill or
even two shawls were wound round the ankles. A head was covered with
a special hat and there were ribbons and beads in hairs. Such costume
is suitable for a dance in the open air.
The modern costume is changed much. It resembles the costume of Baladi
and it can be of any colour, more or less adorned.
