The
style of Saidi is folklore and it takes its origin from the
name from the north region of Egypt “El Saaid”, between
Gizen and Edfu. There are many nations in Egypt, but the nation of
Saidi, as it is considered, has the most dangerous temperament! By
the word of “Saidi” are named all things, connected with
this region.
The style of Saidi is very energetic and simple. Naturally, a cane
(Assaya) is used, but not interperated much. This is used in the dance,
because traditionally the men of these regions had with them long
sticks of bamboo as an arm. Gradually the men’s dance “Tahtib”
was made, where the imitation of a duel took place. The women interperate
this dance, but they made it more light and playful. So, the style
“Raks Al Assaya” appeared.
At present there are two versions of Saidi: the man’s dance
“Tahtib” and “Raks Al Assaya”, which is performed
by men and women together. In both versions a spectator can see a
lot of triks with a cane. The woman’s version is more elegant,
than “Tahtib”.
The Music of Saidi
The music of Saidi has its own rhythm easy to know.
An orchestra plays traditional instruments as a “rababa”
(the ancestor of the modern violin), “mizmar” (a
small horn) and different percussion instruments. Movements of the
cane come after the rhythm of the music.
The
Costume of Saidi
The man’s costume for Saidi is consisted of long trousers, a
shirt with wide sleeves and a roundish collar. The head is covered
with a scarf.
The woman’s costume looks like the costume of “Baladi”.
The head is covered with a kerchief and there is a scarf or a kerchief
round the ankles.
